Governor Hope Uzodinma

His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodinma was elected the 16th Governor of Imo State on the platform of the All-Progressives Congress (APC) On 29 May 2011, Senator Hope Uzodinma was sworn-in as a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, representing Imo State (West Senatorial District). He was re-elected for a second term in the Senate during the 2015 election.

The Executive Governor of Imo State, Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodinma, as an astute and immediate past member of the Nigerian Senate, believes that a suitable society is governed by law, which guarantee security of lives and properties. Based on the aforementioned Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma has aggressively commenced the implementation of his three Rs- Rehabilitation, Reconstruction and Recovery agenda which were the cardinal points on which he campaigned for votes surpassing all expectations within 100 days in office. Interestingly, right from the outset of his administration, Gov Uzodimma made it clear that he understood the concept of continuity in government. History of Imo State

The charming state of Imo whose capital city is Owerri offers a fascinating history and a perfect view into the rich cultural heritage of the Igbos of South East Nigeria. It is a bustling city and the entertainment hub of Nigeria with some of the most popular landmarks and was one of the earliest states created on February 3rd, 1976 during military rule. This is a reason why it is also known as the Eastern heartland.

Nigeria is the largest and the most advanced economy in Africa; with strong growth prospects supported by an emerging, urban middle class and an increasing appetite for high-value goods and services.

Owerri is a fun place to live in. Basically, the city prides itself as the entertainment hub of Nigeria. It is affectionately referred to as Las Vegas of Nigeria, as it boasts an abundance of over 800 (3-5 Star) spacious hotels, casinos, production studios and top-tier spas and wellness centres. Imo State is located in the South East of Nigeria, occupying the area between the lower Niger river and upper and middle Imo river. Imo has a total land area of around 5 100 km² with a population of over 5,927,563 million people – the population density varies from 230 – 1 400 people per square kilometer. Imo is abundantly rich in natural resources including crude oil, natural gas, lead and zinc. Other natural resources found in the state include white clay, fine sand and limestone. The economy is built primarily around agriculture and commerce, with farming the leading occupation among its inhabitants.

The economy of the state depends primarily on agriculture and commerce. One of the primary agricultural production is the production of palm oil. Imo state has the highest natural gas reserve in Nigeria. Christianity is the predominant religion.

Location

Imo state is bordered by the states of Anambra to the North, Abia (until 1991 part of Imo state) to the East, and Rivers to the south and Delta state to the west. Imo consists of coastal lowlands to the east of the Niger River. Most of the state’s original tropical rain forest vegetation has been replaced by more open areas of oil-palm bush. The state lies within latitudes 4°45’N and 7°15’N, and longitude 6°50’E and 7°25’E with an area of around 5,100 sq km.

Rivers and Lakes

The Orashi River has its source in Imo State (named after a powerful Nigerian family with the family name Imo). Imo River, being the major river in the state, runs through Abia State, where it is joined by Aba River from the north, and Akwa Ibom State into the Atlantic Ocean. Otamiri River and its 9.2 km length tributary, Nworie River, flow in the state.

Oguta Lake, Palm Beach Holiday Resort in Awo-omamma and a host of other tourist sites along the banks of the 26 km-length Njaba River present hotspots for tourism investment opportunities.

Weather

The rainy season begins in April and lasts until October, with annual rainfall varying from 1,500mm to 2,200mm (60 to 80 inches). An average annual temperature above 20 °C (68.0 °F) creates an annual relative humidity of 75%. With humidity reaching 90% in the rainy season. The dry season experiences two months of Harmattan from late December to late February. The hottest months are between January and March.
